The PhD Workshop China is an annual event sponsored by China Education International Exchange Association and is a platform for foreign universities to recruit PhD students from China. At this event, overseas universities and research schools present their PhD programs and network with qualified Chinese postgraduates and PhD candidates. In 2012, 13 Canadian universities participated in the Workshop, which attracted over 1500 students from across China.

This event is the gateway for Canadian education institutions to reach China's top postgraduates. The Workshop offers an interview-based recruitment opportunity for foreign institutions. Participating institutions can directly interact with Chinese graduate students who are interested in pursuing their PhD studies overseas. Canada was ranked the "top preferred country of destination to do PhD studies overseas" among the over 1300 responses to a workshop participant survey in 2012. The Workshop not only strengthened Canada's image as a hotbed for research and innovation but also helped Canadian universities attract high-calibre Chinese students to conduct doctoral studies in Canada. Canadian education institutions will benefit from the Workshop and value-added services and activities offered by the embassy on the margins of the Workshop. Options include networking sessions with Chinese institutions looking to collaborate on joint research and visits with relevant Chinese organisations and government officials.
